Cable Cat Ride

Lombard St.
Alcatraz
Pier 39
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
7/13/08
Well, we did the most touristy things we could on our second day in SF. The Hyde-Powell cable car ride from Fisherman’s Wharf was fun. Glad I don’t have to drive on these hills. Union Square was mobbed, so we did some shopping in the Barnes and Noble. It was the biggest book store, four floors. Aislinn was in heaven!
Union Square has the cool hearts at each corner. Tom & Merry picked the Northwest one for their photo op.
We caught thte cable car back to the top of Lombard St., “the crookedest street in the world.” What lovely houses and landscaping.
The boat ride to Alcatraz Island provides beautiful views of the city. The actual tour of the prison provides another kind of view, dark and moody. I highly recommend visiting Alcatraz if you get the chance.
We had a 3:20 ferry to Alcatraz, so we killed a little time on Fisherman’s Wharf. What a tourist mecca: street performers, lots of shopping, tons of people. These are The Silver Men, mimes that move to rap music.
Finally, to end the day, we took a walk back to the pier to watch the sun go down in the fog. Very San Francisco. The kids had never seen anything like it. Sea lions on the floats by Pier 39, the magic show inside in the courtyard, then dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp with a great view of Alcatraz and the rest of the bay. Nice end to a nice day.
