The Heart O’ The Hills Trail
Kingston-Edmonds Ferry
University District
OLYMPIC NP TO SEATTLE, WA
7/21/08
Right up from our tent was the trailhead for Heart O’ The Hills trail. Merry and I decided to try it early before we left Olympic. What a sight - this was the temperate rainforest we had been hearing about. So many trees fall down from the winter storms, huge trees. Anything that falls, becomes host to a whole array of other organisms: moss, ferns, fungi. The fallen logs look like little Whoville forests! Not a lot of sunlight reaches the foret floor, but what beams do penetrate are beautiful.
After we left Olympic, it was about an hour ride to the Kingston-Edmonds Ferry. They do a brisk business here. even waiting about 25 minutes to board and the 20 minute ride are shorter than the two hour plus driving time over land. And it’s a pretty ride too.
Our hotel was in the University District, right by University of Washington and U of Seattle. Cool college neighborhood. Merry found an “Oooh, cool” shop that she had to go in.
